Wicca (also called witchcraft) is a pagan religion from medieval Europe, thought to have come through the Celtic tribes migrating into Europe form the Middle East around 700 BC or so. Somewhat related to ancient Druidism. Most religions are based on a specific writing or holy book, which tells then how to practice their religion. Christianity – the Bible; Islam – The Koran; Buddhism – the Pali texts; ect. Unlike these Wicca has no written guide or holy book. Each group of Wiccans, usually called a coven, writes its own code in what is called a book of shadows. This means there are many who call themselves witches that will actually teach conflicting views.

The basic teachings that most will agree on are as follows:

  1. Evolution and reincarnation, some will also add karma,
  2. There was a god or power that anciently created everything. Since it did this by putting its self into creation it no longer exists and of course no one remembers what it was.
  3. We and all life are from it and therefore are evolving into gods.
  4. The gods of old, including the Christian God, angels, and demons are thought forms. (If enough people believe in a god and put enough energy into it by worship it will become alive, something we create.
  5. Since we have a spirit and are evolving we can develop psychic powers.
  6. A spell cast by a witch is basically a ritual that is supposed to gather energy for a god, thought form, or from people (if enough are present)
  7. Holy days are on the equinoxes and solstices and the mid seasonal festivals (like druids)

The following is a chart that compares ancient Celtic witchcraft with Christianity.

There are legends of an ancient practice among the Wiccans about a god/man/ king whose ritual death brought life to the crops. (in those days reincarnation was taught but karma had not yet crept into Wicca from Hinduism) If Wicca is simply and offshoot of Druidism and Druidism and offshoot from the religion of the Jewish patriarchs mixed with the paganism of Baal we can see why he further back we go the more similar it is to ancient history.

If anyone knows of an ancient written document for this religion please let us know. Since archeologists are constantly digging up new manuscripts one might surface someday.
